An X-ray can be a very useful tool in the diagnostic process, as it is a quick, simple and non-invasive method of looking at your child’s body. X-rays are a type of radiation, such as light, and are less able to pass through hard materials like bone. A detector picks up the X-rays that have passed through, and is able to calculate which parts of the body absorbed more X-rays.

Are there any risks?

X-rays are generally very safe; they use the same type of radiation as CT scans but a much lower dose (100-200 times less). In high doses, ionising radiation can cause cancer, but this is extremely uncommon with the dosage used in X-rays. Your doctor and yourself will reach a joint decision, and when an X-ray is performed it will always be in the best interest of your child. The scan is completely painless.
