What is an abdominal ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound scans are not invasive (they don’t require anything being poked into your body). The machine uses sound waves to create live pictures of the inside of your child’s body. An abdominal ultrasound is an ultrasound scan of the abdomen (tummy region).

The scan itself won’t be performed by Dr Auth personally, but rather by a radiology consultant; a doctor who specialises in these types of scans. A jelly is rubbed onto the belly as this allows for a clearer picture.

The procedure should be comfortable for your child, although the jelly may sometimes tickle a bit.

Are there any risks to having an ultrasound?

Ultrasound scans are completely safe. This is because they use Sound Waves, which do not carry the risks associated with other forms of radiation such as X-Rays.

Preparation

Your child will be told not to eat or drink for a period before the Scan, but this will be explained to you in more detail at a later stage.
